E21, E30General discussion and technical help for 1975-1991 3 series cars.
sweet engine transplant. Shouldn't be killer when it's done. I think with all that power you might want to cram more than 205's in the wheel wells. I know you can at least get 225's in without any problems since Spiff ran that size on his old E30. Although since you are probably lowering it a bunch it might be a tighter fit. Either way, that thing will fly when it is all together.

i'm trying to decide what diff to run. obviously its going to be a lsd, but i don't know what ratio. i think i'm going to run it with the stock 2.93 open and see how the gear lengths feel and the top end.

Quick update:
I took the motor back out halfway and took a hammer to the passenger side firewall just above and to the left of the tunnel. The cylinder head for the m30 will not fit if you don't bang it in a good 2 inches. the more you feel like hammering, the better the engine will go in, but there is always too much of a good thing in this situation.
I got the motor back in and muscled it (literally, i was working alone) into engine position 3!!!!!!
Best sound ever when that big motor settled down on the right mounting point. even in this position i'll be amazed if that radiator will fit. there is very little wiggle room. my urethane mounts may come back to bite me in the ass as well because it looks like the motor won't clear the hood... but i guess we'll have to test it.
i get the radiator, throttle bracket, throttle position sensor tomorrow so if all goes right and i can figure the wiring out, this car will start tomorow.
then on to the cooling routing as well as differentials and driveshaft stuf.

UPDATE: 9-8-06
Motor is in the car and i'm trying to figure out the no start issue. Last night i checked spark (good), then fuel to the rail (a reasurring spray and one shower later = good), so i've narrowed it down to basically being the injectors not being told to open. this could be due to the harness or the ecu not getting a signal it needs. I'm planning on troubleshooting this by using my old eta harness and hooking it up to the eta ecu because at least then i know the injectors will fire and i've heard of people just using this ecu to run the big m30 then having a custom chip burned later.
Big news today though is i just got my suspension order done!!!!!
:WOOT

pads were out of stock forthe ones i wanted at flyingbrick so i'll buy elsewhere. i am free any weekday after 6 and weekends usually sundays are all open and saturdays after 12 maybe...
well good luck with the start, yea it may very well be the ECU, i know the vanos m50 and the non vanos m50 have different ECU's and it wont start if u have the wrong one in(even though vanos doesnt really effect the timing at idle, right?)
