E21 Questions
Hey everyone,
I've been looking for an E30 (pretty much any model) in the recent months, but my friend says he knows where I can get a 320i...he thinks its a 1983, so I'm assuming its an E21? Sounds like its a 4cyl 5spd, 2 doors, but he didn't know the year for sure and doesn't know the VIN number. Well here's the scoop, I am basically looking for a project car to build into a quick (not necessarily fast) track or autocross car and have been researching mostly E30 stuff. I assume the E21 is slightly disadvantaged to the E30, but if I can get this for under $500, I'm going to definately consider purchasing the car. I'll be sure to check out for rust on shock towers, chassis parts, etc, but I was wondering if many suspension parts are available, and if i could find an LSD off another E21 model (does the 320is have an LSD?). I've been autocrossing my GMC Sonoma (s-10) and just need some refreshment, and want just want to be more competitive lol. Anyways, thanks to anyone who can help me, as i am a newbie here, but this place seems pretty credible!
I'd stick w/ the E30 program - there's more of them and parts are readily available. Don't let the initial purchase price dictate your decision - the E30 might cost more upfront but less in the long run.

I hope I didn't offend my e21 bros. They're cool when done right but for someone new to BMWs or new to car restoration the early BMWs are not a good "trial by fire" project. A good "learner" BMW IMO is the E30 and now the e36 there's thousands out there and they can be had affordably. Check out some of the projects and DIYs here in forums and you'll see a pattern - research, budget & patience are the 3 major considerations for any succesful project. Keep in mind, a "driver" ride is tougher than a parked project. If you can afford to get yourself a beater driver the $$$ invested in your project car will pay off in the long run
The E21 is a challenge, but if you can transform one into a track car, that would undeniably stand out in the crowd. But upgrade parts are fewer and far between, so an E30 is always a better bet.
