Hey all, nice forum. Moving back to the US (Atlanta) in August and need to get some wheels. I do my own wrenching, and enjoy it so I am thinking to go with an older 3 series, likely a early 90's 325is. I am new to BMW's but always liked the older body style and they are a blast to drive.

Here's where it gets sticky now. I am married and have a new baby, so reliability is a factor. Is a 3 series the way to go or should I think about another model?

Also, I need a 3 point seatbelt in the back. When did BMW start offering that?

I dont want to spend more than 4k on this, so if anyone is letting their car go in ATL, let me know!

welcome to the forums.

First of all, like any 16 year old car reliability is going to be a factor. Its an older car, and things have to be replaced. I own a 1991 E30 and if i dont stay on top of regular maintenace things tend to break. Of course compared to almost any other car manufacturer an E30 is reliable for its age.

If you get one consider changing the thermostat, belts, water pump right off the bat just to be safe. They tend to go out around 100k miles.

There are three point seta belts in the back of my 318. Except the middle seat, where there is just a lap belt.

Thanks Numark. I agree with you 100 percent. I figure with ANY car you get used, it should be accepted you will need to change all fluids, filters, hoses, thermostat, and usually the brakes and an 02 sensor. Then its smart to reset the ECM as well if possible. By the way, speaking of ECMs, what is the process to pull the codes and reset it? Can anyoe shoot me a decent link to this?

Welcome to the site.

As my 318 partner in crime has stated they are reliable if you make sure you put some time and money into it, its a wonderful 16 year old car and a hell of a lot of fun to drive, you just have to take care of it.

Good luck finding an e30.

agreed with everyone else here that if you maintain the car, it will not fail you. I have had my 96 328is, and it has never failed me, not once.

Thanks for words of encouragement. Much appreciated. Any particular signs of trouble a person should check out before buying? I read the nebie guide and that offered alot of info, but any other advice you can offer before buying?

Just look around for a deal and don't be afraid to go to alabama or TN or SC for a car, because in my extensive research/dream searching, cars in atlanta, particularly older cars, tend to be over priced. Like E30 325is for 6 grand.
