hmm......

I personally couldn't tell you, sorry.

But If you check back in a couple hours, i'm sure you'll have some good replies. There aren't many people on right now. Dudesky and c1apton and others will be on at some point and they are all very knowledgeable about the BMW transmissions.

You mean it pops out of 5th? If you hold it in, does it work? I have a friend who used to carry a 2x4 with him, to jam it between the stickshift and his seat so it wouldn't pop out :lol

In a nutshell, your 5th gear synchronizer has failed. You either need a rebuild, or it may be cheaper to get a used transmission put in. Sorry for the bad news :(

Does it shift "normal" in other gears? If so, it's as D-sky mentioned, probably syncro problems. If the other gears are somewhat difficult it's a possibility that you have a shifter issue. (bushings, etc)

If it goes into fith and then pops out I don't think it is a syncro issue. Even with bad syncros you can get into gear, there will just be some grinding issues.

Like c1apton mentioned you might have bad shift linkage bushings. Do you have play in the shifter while it is in other gears?

Not always. That's a typical and the most common problem with the synchromesh system, but not the only one. Sometimes the balk rings don't allow the shaft collar to fully lock into gear, causing it to disengage and go back to its detent position, in between gears, as was the case with my friend's Jetta. In the end, he destroyed the gearbox by keeping it forced in with the shifter, but it got him home to Jersey from Ohio.

But I agree that I may have jumped the gun on my first reply; it could indeed be a sloppy shifter issue. If so, it could be the seat bushing; the big plastic ring at the bottom of the 'stick'.

so how much would that cost to get fixed

Dudesky 06-22-2006 06:39 PM

^^^A shifter rebuild? Don't know what they'd charge you; I did mine myself and the parts cost me about $130 :dunno
