Newbie needing some learning.

I just bought a 1991 318is, silver/black, beautiful car, only 103k on it. I need some help. I can't find a haynes manual or a Bentley manual for the car. I have read that the 1991 has a E30 Chasse with an M42 Engine, so that it isn't covered by any of the manuals entirely, but you need two different manuals for the car. Can any body help me with this? Any general knowledge about this car would be helpful.

On a second note, My Battery Light is on, check voltage from bat and alt. all works out. the higher the RPMs the brighter the battery light, Bat is fine, charged and holds, alt is charging battery. I just don't understand why the battery light is stil on. I have already replaced the Voltage reg with a brand new oem. Any help would be great. Thank you!

the bentley manual for the E30 covers all models from '84 to '91 including the 318i. im pretty sure that it covers both the M10 and M42 engines.

i also have the haynes manual as a pdf if you want that.

No the bentley does not cover the 91 318is, it covers m10 powered e30's. For your car you will need an e30 bentley manual, and for your engine you will need an e36 318 bentley manual.

celsdogg 06-13-2006 09:30 AM

^^^ yeah, ure right. my mistake. on looking at my bentley again it only covers the M10.

that sucks that you have to get two manuals. and the E36 one will only help with the engine! all the other chapters might as well be TP!

Thank you for all the replys. I am glad I can finaly put that to bed. Now to get both manuals......:) The 318is is going to the shop for some front end work....Should I go total OEM, I kinda want to keep the car in original shape. What do you guys think? The car really is a creampuff!

Thanks Again!

I tend to prefer all OEM :)

Sorry I didn't catch this thread before I also have an e30 318is, For the chasis the e30 bently book will do, for the engine you would need the e36 bently.

Pics of the ride, and I think you should do suspension :devil

nick_318is,

Your ride been repainted? That "mofo" is shiny! I have to get out and polish and wax this weekend. I live in Maine and the weather has not been the leat bit cooperative!

Oh! I have question maybe you guys can help me with. Whats up with the locking system on my car? 91 318is. The driver door lock has two positions. The first which lock all the door and trunk and the second where the key is turned all the way to the right, the 2nd position makes it so I can only unlock the car from the drivers door and disables your abiltiy to unlok the car from the truck. What is the point? after playing with it for a while, it is literally possible to lock someone in the car! But really, what the point, I must be missing something....thanks....

nick_318is 06-14-2006 07:08 PM

I dont think i have that problem. Might be your lock cylinder.

Nope the car has the original paint on it still, gotta rub it out every once and a while and wax and wash the beast.

The point of it is to make unauthorized entry even more difficult. Note that you can only double lock the car from the outside, thus, you can never get locked in, unless you lock another person in on purpose :lol
