1st there are 2 types of freon for automotive - R12 and R134. I believe yours is R12. You can find both at parts stores but the R12 is getting harder since the changeover to R134. They are NOT interchangeable. They make conversion kits to replace R12 to R134 compressors but I don't think your $500 budget is going to cut the costs of replacing compressor, rec'r/drier & condensor. How long has it been since your AC was last used? I'm asking because the longer they sit dry, the worse the internal seals & fittings get. I'd check with your local shops that do auto AC on having them just try recharging. reason being: they have to evacuate the system, then recharge. They can also put in a dye to check for leaks. If you haven't used it in a year or two - prepare yourself for "sticker shock"- it's not cheap to fix or convert. (Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - )

It's recommended to use your AC once a week or so.

I dont use ac unless its about 100, i need as much of my little power that I can, i realize this didn't help any.

In looking at my service records, Before the car was mine it was retrofited to 134A, it was done at the dealer and looks like it cost about $1500 to have it done and this was in june of 2004 so it probably costs more now.
