are you sure it disappears after 4K RPM, or is it just that the engine noise is louder than the whining.... it may be your belts, but thats a horrible answer and i have no idea.. just thought you may be observant of that

Your description is pretty vague. I think model, mileage, year and condition of car would be great help to those of us trying to help you diagnose this from afar. (pics of car & engine compartment would be helpful too - believe it or not. There's a ton of folks here who can spot stuff in pics)
I may have you confused with another new member but aren't you the guy with the handling problem with 2 different tire/wheels too?

it could also be something really simple man...... check your heat shield and makesure it is all still secure (particularly around your driveshaft) i know mine was giving me shit a little while ago so i just had to tack it back up ! lets hope its something simple like that and not anything major!

Check your timing chain. They're suggested to be replaced somewhere around 50-80k miles.

the chain itself is. I think it was some internal that held on the chain on or tensioned. Not sure exactly. I know something would start rattling at around 3k rpm..and it would be annoying. Thats what i thought he was talking about.
Since its a 88 325..it cant be a M42. So...idk.

Nope BUT i took it in and they said it was the valve timing that was making the noise...they did adjust it and its a lil quieter but not gone away...they said thats all they could do though....said it wasnt a bad thing that it happens with some older cars.....

Yes it is true. Alot of the older 12valve motors will start ticking as the cam and the ecentics wear.
