Headlight problem
Hey guys, tonight i ran out in my car and noticed my drivers side low beam is dead (it worked this afternoon though). The high beam in the same light works, my question is Can i just replace a bulb for my lights or do I have to replace the whole lamp?
Heh, I think if you take it to the dealer, they will say whole lamp... IMO the bulb itself should be fine... ps. perfect time to upgrade to xenons bulbs if you didnt have em already

does your car have sealed beams or projectors? I can never remember what the later e30s had. I think they came with sealed beam for 83-87, then projectors for 88-89, then after that I'm not sure.

I think this is right, but I have noticed that some 88 and + E30's have had sealed beams put in after crashes. I noticed Nick said the high beam part on the low beam light works -- that must be the sealed beam type because the projectors have low only

^yea i cant tell you if they are projectors or sealed at this point. Usually i thought the lows would not go on when the his were on but tonight when i put the highs on all 4 lights were on. I will take a better look tomorrow when its not raining and when its light out.

I have cleared this up, i understand I have the sealed beams and that I can get a new bulb for about $10-12 from the dealer, so thats my plan for tomorrow. Thanks for the help Witeshark and Bex
Regardless of a sealed beam or not - when you put on the "highs" all four light up. The lows are a dual element both capsule type or sealed. The sealed beam will have three prongs (on the back side) BUT are an integral part of the light, the capsules have a removable "capsule" or center section. (This is a bitch to describe...) Screw going to the dealer, just go down to an Autozone or a good parts store and have one of their guys show you - it's simple to do either version. (sealed beams at a parts store are like $3.00)
Nick, you can't buy a new bulb, you have to buy a whole new light as your bulb is welded into the headlight. Once BMW started to install airbags, the projectors were cut so the car wouldn't cost too much.
