Yea, I think you can do that with E30 keys, and earlier E36's. But let us know how it works out for future reference.

I've found its easiest just to go to the stealership and have them get a key cut from your VIN for you. It cost me $25 Canuckistani dollars to have it done.

Not necessarily.
We had an e38 740iL Sport come in and needed a new key. So my manager thought to have somebody come and copy the original because the customer broke the key (luckily it was where the metal part of the key and the plastic come together...so the key still worked but kinda didn't). So the guy came out and copied 2 keys (just like the valet of the e36/46-round key).
And, this is what happened. The key opened the door, but DIDN'T start the car.
Soooo, the guy ended up buying 2 new keys and a valet key. Brand spankin' new.
I hope it works out.

on the e30 you should be fine. later cars a chip was put into the keys and without the chip the car won't start.

well. I got the key. It was a beutiful blank. Of course i take it in to be copied and they fuck it up!!! GODAMIT. so i stayed calm, explained that i was pretty pissed off as he already probally knew. SO he cut me another replacemtn key for free and gave me a bottle of Lock ease or something, to make my locks work smother. But i did take the inards out of the new key and put them in the old key so i now have a little light in my key and its not falling apart.
the end

Where did you take it to get cut, and what did it cost to have it done, just a couple bucks?

how does a key cutting shot mess up on cutting a key?? That's just rediculous. I would definitely not go back there.
On a brighter side, you now have a working light in your E30 key.
I remember when I was like 7 and my grandpa had his E38 535. I thought the flashlight on the key was the coolest thing...

Down to the "stealership"... for someone who can reliably cut them.

You pretty much have to go to the dealership. For mine, i had to show them the registration with my VIN, and then they have the lasercut key sent from Germany in 7-10 days. Which reminds me i should go pick up the one i ordered lol.
