what if ? intake ?
if you ran a cone filter directly to the engine and bypassed the mas what would happen ? leaving the mas connected but not interupting the airflow. would this work, you would need to get cold air to the mas for best function right ?

Put the MAS connet it directly to your intake via home depo drain pipe connections. Then conenct your cone to the end of the MAS.

heres what i got so far. huge cone just in front of the MAS, mesh screen in the headlight hole so i have almost direct airflow from outside. i need to built a cone shield. would the direct flow from the filter to the TB work better if the MAS was not in place. would the MAS read functionally if located on the interior fender under the hood ?

What If
The big thing is to get that filter out of the engine compartment (unless you encase it in the big plastic box just forward of the AFM )and all of that heat. Also, if you use a K&N filter do not over oil, it does not take much, (good question on this in current Raod and Track in the technical question section).

What are you talking about?
Listen, you don't have a MAF. The M20 has a AFM, and there is no way you can bypass it. The engine's vacuum pressure is what moves the metal flap. The car will not know how much fuel to add, and you will have many many problems.
Stick with your stock intake, and get a K&N panel filter. If you're after a CAI because of the sound it makes, then drill your airbox below the filter. There is no reason to do a CAI on a E30. The air passage is all ready very direct and flows nicely.

THANK YOU! I was gonna go crazy trying to figure out how he got a MAF engine when it would take THOUSANDS OF $$$ to get that conversion done right on a non "M" e30!
And Hamann is right, the intake setup on our engines is pretty direct and pretty good! Leave it alone, just punch a couple holes in the lower section of the air box for the "Intake Howl" that a CAI would give you!
Just my .02
