m42 head w/m44 block
Ive been thinkin about throwing a supercharger on my car. I have a problem... the m42 block doesnt have a knock sensor ( i think thats what its called) The supercharger I want will blow my engine without it. Its meant for the e36 models I think. So I was thinking of finding an m44 block, but I want to keep my old head. When I bought the car it had overheated and cracked the head. I got it welded and then ported and polished. I'd rather keep my old head than start over again. Im pretty sure the heads match, but I thought I would ask and get some different opinions... thnx
Ill be pushing over 300 horses if it works

Welcome to the Forums!!!
If your blocks been cracked and re-welded im not sure a supercharger is good for it. I recomend since your supercharging it get a new block and head. What supercharger are you getting for it?

I think the company you mean is Downing Atlanta but im not sure. They have a really nice kit for the 4cyl BMW's for not alot of money. Supposed to take the stock engine to 200hp.

well is just ordered a cold air intake for the car... that should be in sometime soon. i got the guy that worked on my head to match the intake and i got a full exhaust. the m42 comes with a stock header too so i suppose that helps. and theres a guy out in california who worked on my cams. its pretty quick for a four banger. im loving the gas mileage right about now too

200hp is really good for a four banger, unless its the E30 M3 4-banger cause that comes stock with 200hp. But what sucks is the engine alone is $20,000 CDN and the tranny is $6,900

The DAS doesn't fit the E30 M42 because of the pully system and the lack of knock sensors. M44s are crap, don't get one. Get the E36 M42 block as it's the same internals, just different externals.

downing atlanta makes sweet superchargers. some guy had one on a z3 at the andretti meet a couple weeks ago. it was sweet. his car was soo hooked up he had alcohol injection. he had chase cam hidden in his custome front bumpers (he had SWEET splitters complete with control arms so you know they were functional, not just cosmetic.) custom roundels all around. custom interior.
back on topic.... i've heard good things about downing atlanta

Just by a complete M42 from a E36. Make sure the M42 has 2 pullies, and it's not an M44. That's what I plan on doing.

Nope, the change over year was 1996. The shitty M44 was BMWs answer to a OBDII compliant M42.
