1987 325e Flywheel problem??
Hi there , a friend of mine just got this 87 325E . The instrument panel lens has been painted to cover the warning lights . It has been used and abused and it cranks over but won't start . I browsed the site here and I am really leaning to flywheel , but I really want to make sure before going there . Any pictures of what the TDC marker looks like would be great . I have looked in the hole where the sensors mount up on the bell-housing , turned the crankshaft all the way around twice and I don't see a marker ????? I did pull the inspection cover and I found a piece metal laying in the bell . Looks like it could have come from the flywheel but..... The flywheel is just soooooo expensive I want to be sure .

OK, slow down there pilgrim. Car cranks but no start, was/is the timing belt broken? If no what led you to timing as the culprit? Missing/broken sensors could very well cause the no start situation. Is there a known issue with the clutch/flywheel on this particular car? Also have you checked fuel delivery and spark? What were the results?

It cranks over but it has no spark, hooked a noid light to the injectors and cranked it over but no injector pulse . Both wires on the ignition coil are hot with the test light (no pulse or flash.

The coil fires by when the saturation is dumped by the ecu grounding it. The ECU also fires the injectors. Lack of fuel pulse/ignition spark means either the ECU ISN'T getting a signal from the crank sensor (check wiring, sensor etc) or the ECU crapped out. Check the sensor and associated wiring first, if it works and is functional, then I'd be getting the ECU tested.

It is a known problem from what I can find searching the web for this year . I just wanted to verify with a look at the flywheel trigger . I pulled the stiffener off the front of the bell housing and found a "pez" shaped piece of metal and it looks like it may have come off the edge of the flywheel. He already swapped the ignition coil, fuel pump and the ECU before he dragged me into helping him try to get it running , all the wiring to the engine and ecu and sensors looks good ( no rubbing or shorts that we can find ).

OK, now I got where you're at. Has he replaced the crank sensor itself? Also when I look up the sensor location it shows it should be on the front of the engine right under the alternator and not in the bell housing on the flywheel. The vehicle speed sensor is the one on the bell housing.
