e21 clutch questions
hello my name is red and i drive a 1980 320i.
i purchased it with a good restoration and a rebuilt engine.
but recently the clutch has had some stiffness with going into 1st and 2nd. it will be more pronounced when the weather is colder but will subside once driven for about 20 min. the clutch is not only stiff when entering those gears, it will also on occasion grind if it feels like it. although not much of an issue at present, i fear it will worsen.
i have heard that some older cars share a singular reservoir for brake fluid and clutch fluid as well. i dont know if this is true for mine, but am hoping for some clarification and suggestions.
thanks! -red

I think you're right, older cars did share a reservoir for clutch and brakes, but I'm not sure that was still used in the E21 cars, but I could be wrong. I wonder if your clutch throwout bearing may be a fault here, instead of anything having to do with a common reservoir...

Yup, common reservoir. It's on the e30's too. I've had the same thing happen with both of mine, and it was a harbinger of a dying clutch. Clutch still holds and doesn't slip, but there isn't enough material left to shift smoothly (tines on the pressure plate or throwout bearing wearing through). Also check the slave cylinder, they can develop a small leak and cause havoc as well.

it would make some sense to me if there turned out to be a leak. in the slave cylinder was it? or something else? because on occasion there is a smokey smell from under the passenger side door...i could see that there was a fluid being dripped onto the exhaust system and then would make that smell to rise up. i took it for something unrelated and was not too concerned because there was no drips on the ground when i would leave my parking spot. the fluid was mostly clear and oily. what is that you say about clutch wearing? if i am experiencing this is there a way to check and see the damage? thanks for the help fellas. -red
