Crank position sensor question on a 1990 BMW 325is

hi all, I recently used my BMW to jump start my mini van that had a dead battery. While doing so, i notice that my mini vans alternator started smoking, so i unhooked all the jumper cables. Needless to say, i toasted my mini vans alternator =(. Anyway the next day, while driving my BMW going about 40mph for about 2 miles. the engine just shutdown...tried to start it right away but its just cranking, it would not start all the way. Could this be the reason why my car would not start all the way because the CPS are damaged when i accidentally and carelessly connected the wrong terminal on the battery when i jumped start my mini van? please help if you can.... I'm not sure what kind of damaged i have done by connecting the opposite battery terminal... thanks.
