Question Oil Disaster! 1986 320i

Hi

I have a friend who recently bought an 1986 320i, shortly after he had it, it broke down on him, when i was looking over the car to see what might have been wrong with it i discovered that there was no water in the water tank and that there was engine oil in the tank itself that must have somehow been accidentally poured in there.
I was just wondering if anyone would be able to tell me what would happen if the car had been started with this oil in the water tank, and if this is fixable by cleaning out all the hoses and flushing the radiator?

Also, the car had been puffing out blue smoke from the exhaust before it died.

Thanks in advance for your help.

(p.s if anyone knows where i could get a detailed breakdown of the engine of this car i would be greatly thankful)

Sounds like the head is cracked. You need to inspect your pistons and get a new head. Nothing uncommon in the M20's.
