lurches and accelleration drops off

My 87 325is is having a problem that I thought might be cold related, but it's much warmer and still there. Upon acceleration and driving the car does several different things. It will kind of stall but no drive upon taking off from a stop. It will lurch or chug while driving. It will start to loose power whgile driving and then suddenly pick up power like nothings wrong.

Before I just start throwing money at things until something fixes I was wondering if anyone had an idea of the best place to start.

Thanks
Denny

To add to the list, vacuum lines, or possibly an alternator?

Addendum to initial problem

Sometimes, not all, when the car is doing its lurching thing, I have to pull to the side of the road. When I shut the car off and restart it the problem clears up, nit completely, but it isn't any where near as bad.

Suggestions
