Hi...new here with a prob. at hand - United Bimmer Community

I had a ffsshhing noise...which I could hear clearly when driving.
I thought it might be from the front brake pads because they did needed changing...But I changed em today and the sound is still there.

I'm pretty certain that the sound is coming from the passenger side...but I can't tell if it's from back or the front.
What could it be? bad wheel bearings is all I suspect.

So has any of you ppl who have experienced this figure out what the solution is?

your link seems to be missing some of the middle bits. . .

in any case, you might be hearing the fuel pump. if you pull the rear seat off, there is an access point there where you can replace it. it might be dying.

if it isnt, does it change with road or engine speed? any other characteristics of the noise would be helpful.

Dude that's not the way to get help you posted that at 2:00am when most of us with jobs are asleep and can't help. No offense to you but be a little more kind when asking others for help you can't always expect a solution immediately for what could be any number of problems and not coming on the forum and saying you guys suck because you don't have a solid answer and because you can't post a working link. Did you think to check out some of the suggestions in that other thread? We need more input from you to help solve the problem since your god knows where and a lot of time it helps to be able to drive a car or to see the car, we can only speculate.

I gotta say...I'm really surprised this issue has not been really identified/inspected further...e30 has been around for some time now, and some have experienced this.

I hate to say it, but I think those rotors might be bad enough to need replacing.

Yes it was me that post that initial thread, and i am a HE btw

that was the issue i had, certainly i haven't fixed since i bought another E30 and i have been tearing that one on the streets

One way to find out is lift the rear and start the car, make sure the front tires are secure, if you can do it in a shop much better, easier, than shift the car on drive and check the rear, for my car i have narrowed it down to few things listed below:

1) Emergency break pads rubbing/stuck on inside rotor, (try adjusting the pads, there is a DYI somewhere here or other e30 forums)
2) rear wheel bearings, most probable cause, not recommended to do yourself unless you have that bearing puller kit. Pricey but worth taking to bmw independent shop or somewhere who you trust and can perform the job.
3), differential. i don’t know when was the last time you flushed the fluid or if that even will fix the issue.

it could also be your drive shaft, not sure though.

if the pump is going out it will do more of a whining sound.

if you start with the easier things then you can pretty much narrow it down to your source.

how many miles on your car, do you have records of maintenance if you are not the previous owner. what have you replaced so far?

Pull up the back seat, remove the gas pump cover, if the same noise increases its your fuel pump, I have a faint hissing noise also but could care less.

And that picture isnt a BMW

im voting for differential fluid. Or tranny fluid.

My e30 had a whinning at speed(55+) that i could not figure out. Turns out the sound was from old diff fluid.

try that. its a cheap and easy fix. If it works then great. If not you still have new Diff fluid.

well the car has 133k miles...with some records of oil/tire/etc. changes.

what I did was open the back wheels...oil some places up...and put em back on since it looked well on the pads and rotors.

For the front I just decided to do pads and no new rotors...cuz they look fine.

I plan to get a suspension kit soon...as the car needs it bad.
I will chk my records for diff. fluid change dates...

what do you mean "oil some places" where/what can you oil?

can you also downsize the picture you are hosting of that wrong rotor, that is not a regualr E30 rotor in my opinion,,well unless is a M3 E30 i guess.

To answer your question on a wheel bearing noise, i can't really describe it in 3 letters it would be a kind of grinding/humming sound. If only one wheel bearing was bad you would hear less of it when you turning and adding weight to that wheel but otherwise you would probably hear it. It would also get louder with more speed.
