I think you can find a decent car for $2500 I have seen people get even better deals then that with some looking for cars that are in pretty good shape. A Really good example is probably worth $5000+

My '91 318i averages just over 26 mpg in So Cal with an equal mix of putting in traffic and enthusiastic driving on streets and freeway. Highway can be 31 without trying too hard. My wife and I took the old e30 with 275,000 miles on a camping kayaking road trip through the mountains from Orange County to British Columbia. We carried 2 large cobra kayaks strapped to the roof rack and were loaded with gear, including firewood! With the extra weight, continuous mountain and backroad travel with "slight" wind resistance on the roof rack the old bimmer fought against gravitational forces and soupy atmosphere for an average 24 mpg.
