We still aren't sure that it does need a transmission it is just going to be likely. He came recommended by someone with multiple bmws and is the only mechanic here that only does bmw. It is also the only shop here that is Dinan certified or whatever. There are always tons of cars there so he should be fine.

Since the 325 and 325e/es are running the 2.7 liter eta engine, I think the transmission ratios are different. 325i makes 168 hp and the eta about 121 hp.

Could be the linkage as said above ^^ one went in one of my cars and it felt like something was blocking it as it wouldn't go into gear, If the gear box/ transmission was no good it'll be making a whineing noise getting louder the worse it gets.

I'm not sure. They are going to look at it more today. They probably already have, but I will call them and check. When that happened to you did it just not go into gear at all or did it let you sometimes and then not other times?

I found it hard to select 1st and 3rd when it first started going and then when the linkage finally went i couldn't select any forward gear, hope that helps

Finally talked to them today. It is going to need a new transmission, clutch, timing belt, front seals, water pump, coolant hoses, rear muffler, and theres more that he said could wait and the car would be fine. He thinks that at some point before the car was driven with no transmission fluid. Nothing would surprise me at this point with other things that I have found out about my car, but anyways the estimate is coming to somewhere around $3300. This sucks.

I think i'm probably going to get another E30. I'm not going to sell this one though. I doubt I could even get $500 for her. Plus I have always had a thing about keeping my first car. :sigh (We need a sighing smiley too..) In the meantime I need to find another car! I am definitely pushing for another BMW. I would really like another E30, but I don't think I really have the time to wait for a nice one to show up. If I can't find a good one I think I want a nice e34.

damn that sucks. Actually how much are e30's in your area? The ones here usually sell for like $2k - $4k (4k being really good condition) so if those are all the repairs you'd need it might be worth it because you'd know the history of the car and you would have a lot of new parts postponing the next maintenance cycle for awhile. However I don't know much about your car and how easy it is to find another good one cheaply in your area. If nothing else just garage it and work on it yourself when you have free time sometime in the future. Then you can have a fleet of BMW's and you can be a BAMF.

Well I don't know too much about the history because the guy we bought it from never got us the records. And when I have called the mechanic he took it to they never answer and won't reply to the messages. I am thinking I will be better off money wise buying another car and then slowly doing some of the repairs myself like you just said. I have been wanting to work on my car anyways. Where I live the e30s are going from between 1k-5k just depending on the car. I know of a 91 318i that is about 100 miles away it has only had 1 owner and he has ALL of the records for 4k, but its an auto... I have to have a stick I can't drive autos.

*update* We decided to get the car fixed since once it was all done the car was going to be in great mechanical condition. The total was pretty high, but the car is completely different. It is AMAZING. God I love my car.
