Temp on E30 (with new K&N and heat shield)

My E30 with it's M40 engine used to always be on the halfway mark, once it had been driving a while, but since fitting the new kit, I have noticed it rarely gets halfway, which means all is working great. The temp indicates just over a quarter for most of the time, and sitting in traffic on humid day, just under half.

What sort of temp readings do other E30 owners have and with what air induction set up?

When normal, mine was always right about exactly halfway

when i got my first E30, the temp was always half. replaced that thermostat and it ran between 1/4 and half. this E30 always runs about a quarter, maybe a little more. in the summer it gets to half.

both had stock air.

I got a cone filter and heat shield (Ebay) and it will warm up at a decent pace (around 15-20 minutes to 1/4 to 1/2). It hangs around 1/2 to 3/4 in traffic () and when i'm pushing it hard it's about the same.

Elsabor: got all my stuff from ebay too, as it seems the easiest way to shop over here in France. I did take my car out for a bit of drifting action (off the public road), and really did give her some stick, and that time her temp went well past half way!

By the way, is that a sun blind in the back of you 325? It it one of the types that fixes with screws? I was thinking of getting one to stop the sun fading my luggage cover. Where did you bet it? The 'bay perhaps.............

I didn't bet on it. I had it on my previous E30 and put it on this one. If you want, I can check if they have one at the shop where I work on my car. I'll let you know later on.

Have you always ran the stock setup? I am debating wether to put mine back in with a K&N since I'm having a hard time placing the heat shield on because of a bigger radiator than my previous E30. What worked better for you guys?

GT: I found 2 of them. I'll send you pics later in the week.

Cheers mate. The touring window is quite different though, as there's no parcel shelf, so wondering if that would actually work.............I don't think so.

mines the same. i guess it depends on the thermostat themselves and their rating. i think old ones tend to have higher temps too.

i dont think it really matters, as long as its not in the red!

How do you figure out the ratings on the thermostats?

^^^ they have temperature ratings that state what temp, in celsius, the thermostat opens. they are around 70 - 80 degrees C, for the E30 anyway.
