figured out noise from rear of engine!

so for some time now i have been noticing a noise coming from underneath the car. seems like at the bottom of the engine.

other than this noise, my E30 sounded great, just like my last E30. It was just this noise that sounded like something rotating unevenly. i thought it was the journals or something. . . something engine wise.

i didnt say anything here because it would have been vague at best.

then, i was reading an issue of bimmer magazine, and in tech q&a someone was having a problem with a sound in the similar area, cept the bimmer in question was a 2004 330Ci.

turns out, that with a manual transmission, there is some gear noise from the getrag unit. BMW calls this standard operating noise. push the clutch in, and it disappears. no wonder i never heard it in my slushbox E30.

so turns out, nothing is wrong, and everything is good to go. just figured i would post this so the information was available.

also, this is probably something that applies to multiple BMW models, new and old. BMW tried to limit the noise with dual mass flywheels and for the most part its a thing of the past, but can sometimes still be heard.

enjoy!

Pretty interesting, never heard of this. No sound from mine tho. But then there are other noises I'd love to get rid of on my car

Yea Hoo you just made my night !!!
Now I can just go back to and forget about it.

I have been thinking along the line of a clutch replacement and everything.

Now have you read about this noise?
Every time I accelerate or decelerate I hear a clunk like bad universals etc...

I found nothing until one day by a fluke I found the noise. It comes from the tail of my trani. I was revving it a little checking the idle and when the engine settled back down i would hear it faintly.... There really is not much play in it.
Any thoughts?

Have a great day !
Jami

Nope thats not it. It looks new. The noise is actually in the trani. I was under there and know this is where it is.
