E21, E30General discussion and technical help for 1975-1991 3 series cars.
i have an 1989 325i and about 6 months ago it started making the same noise. its been running fine ever since but it makes that distinctive clicking noise when its running. the clicking gets faster at higher rpm too. i assumed it was the valves and never had it checked.
im going to do a valve adjustment on it due to your suggestions. but as some of you said, are you sure it makes that noise just due to wear and tear?
The valves are not adjustable on the E36. According to Bentley, the M44 engine uses hydraulic valve adjusters (HVA) with rocker arms, and the M42 & 6cyl engines use hydraulic cam followers. Both systems are self adjusting and require no maintenance. It's normal for tapping to occur at startup for these systems, but if the tapping persists after 10-15min, then the HVA or follower needs replacement, which means removing the camshaft first
