It might need to be reset. Check the Bentley manual and it should tell you the procedure. It happened to me once and I went to the dealer and they put key in the ignition and turned it several times to position 2 and then it worked. Last resort is buying batteries for the key. When I went to the dealer, they reset it for free.

Thanx
I have already checked the batteries in the keys and they are up to par. The last set of instructions for key initialization I found did not work. I'll try the Bentley.

with the doors locked, turn it to position 2 i think and press and hold the unlock button for 10 seconds or so. (may be with doors unlocked and pressing the lock button). call the dealer to double check

Help!
This information is on www.cardomain.com/ride/2480454/7 also.
My keys stopped working remotely for my door locks/alarm. This is what I did!
- The key Re-initialize process.
If a key fails to operate remotely, it will have to be re-initialized (all keys in sequence at the same time)
1. Get in and “close all doors”
2. Turn ignition on & off quickly (no more than 5 seconds) to start the process. When turning the ignition on & off it's not necessary to start the engine. The next action must take place within 30 seconds.
3. First key - hold down button #2 (unlock button) while pressing button #1 (lock button) three times. Release all buttons. All doors should lock and unlock on their own 1 time.
4. Immediately do the same thing with the other remote(s) within 30 seconds of the previous remote.
5. After all remotes have been done, turn the ignition on & off quickly again to finalize the process. When turning the ignition on & off it's not necessary to start the engine.
This process has to be done when you purchase a new key, the keys loose sync with the car, your battery dies in the remote, or when changing the remote battery and it takes longer than 10 seconds to do so.
I hope this helps. This information is in NO Way making me responsible for any errors, damages or screw ups. As with all second hand information, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Thanx for all your help. I have tried to re-initialize and nothing works. The central locking system works with the driver door key and the security system engages. The remote still won't work.

Any other ideas?
I work for BMW Manufacturing. I've installed that system and sync the keys many times on the job. I don't understand why it didn't work. I did my keys 2 weeks ago when the battery died in the spare. Private Message me your number if you want and i'll call you. Or you can email me your number to e39bimmer@charter.net
I'll Private Message you my number as well.

Hi, I've got exactly the same problem, the central locking system works but not the remote. I've checked fuses 6, 27 & 29 and apparently are ok and done your process bun nothing happened...
Any more ideas?

i have tried the remote reprograming.......it work perfectly and was sooooooo easy. thank you all. regards, roseman44. by the way i bought my 2001 530 used two years ago it had 48,000 miles it now has 94,000. i did not know when i got it how many miles the brakes had on them when purchased. but........ it has been almost 50,000 miles i put on, and the brakes are still excellent. this compares with my jeep new pads every 12,000 miles. i drive over an hour in stop and go traffic everyday this is very impressive. i do know that when i need to replace them i will get factory bimmer brakes.
