Any 524td owners, specialists, enthusiasts?
I drive a 1976 Mercedes-Benz 300D. It has a great engine with a mere 301,702 miles on it. This car has made me really, really like diesels. Unfortunately, it has an absurdly short geared 4 speed automatic and handles like a dead pig, and I'd much rather drive a bimmer anyway. To the point: My girlfriend doesn't like her 528ea much anymore. I would like to find a stock, tall geared 5 speed transmission from a 528e and a 2.4 turbodiesel from a 524td or Lincoln Mark VII (same engine) and put them into my girlfriend's car which I will be buying from her, assuming this is possible. As far as I know, almost all BMW sixes are interchangable, but diesels are a completely different animal. Might be too heavy? If so, maybe I could get some different spings to compensate? Does anyone here know anything at all on this subject? Like if the 2.4 is a direct-injection or IDI engine? Ideally I would like to rip out the power seats, windows, stupid computer and all that heavy stuff to have myself a lightweight veggie burner that corners. Or am I dremaing?
