NEW Member questions...
Hi Guys,
I'm a new member here from New Zealand, and in the market for my first BMW. I grew up with parents all owning them, so I'm kinda walking in their foot steps in this respect. My first question: I'm looking at a 1995 BMW 540i e34 V8. its done 195k Is there any reason why i SHOULDN'T buy this car? im getting it at a reasonable price. My Second Question: Whats this 'front plate delete' thing? in NZ we HAVE to have front plates even though it seems bikes don't have them :doh |
Welcome to UB.c :wave
Hard to answer the 1st question unless you know more about the car. If you're asking based soley on mileage, I'd say it's not necessarily a factor. BMW's are known to run high mileages if taken care of reasonably. Keep checking back, as some of the E34 guys here may be able to offer some insight on what to look out for when considering this purchase. The front plate delete is a bumper strip replacement that eliminates the area where the plate goes. |
Mine has done 182k and is running well. No reason you shouldn't buy it. Where are you? If in Auckland, you can have a quick look at mine if you would like.

No, nothing wrong.....buuuut
IMO, an e39 540i Sport is MUCH better. :p Check out my sig. :deal |
Check out Torque's thread here for things that will break on an E34. You can maybe check some of these things out, to see if theyve been replaced: http://www.unitedbimmer.com/forums/e...ill-break.html

How about the most major deciding factor that you have. Exacatly how much are they asking for it?
|
yes i was gonna mention that next
$10k NZD has 18" momo wheels, new tyres, new shocks, new bushes. dynatron alarm system. not lowered either which im happy about because i have a lowered car at the moment - and its not very comfortable. and i would LOVE an e39 but the budget doesnt allow for it. |
welcome to ub, and I love the way you guys spell tire.
As far as the car goes, just dont buy it with your heart, unless your prepared to marry it. |
I'd take it to Coombes Johnson in Hamilton and get their 100 point check done on it.
If it has a good service history and looks in good condition, you will have a great car. Is is NZ new or a Jap or Singaporean import? Try to stick with an NZ new one, they have genuine BMW bits. The others have a local content component and different transmissions. On the tyre front (we spell it that way, because we speak English). If you are running 235/40/18's they will cost you around $3,000 for a set of good tyres. The 17's are about $1,800. |
well apparrently coombes johnston have been doing all the servicing requirements - he's done his own oil and oil filter changes and hes just replaced the shocks and put in nolethane bushes.
I never asked what sort of import it was. i know the Jap imports are bad due to a faulty tranmission sensor. and i know the singaporeans are better but the heat has something to do with the wiring so ive been told. for the price and the test drive, i'm almost definately going to get it, but i would marry a BMW if it werent for the fact i married my wife first. :P |
Good luck with your car. Take some pics and post them.

It is hard to get a better all round car for the money. Good luck.
Join the BMWCC too. www.bmwclub.org.nz There is a lunch at Viligrads on the 2nd of June. And you will appreciate the 10% discount on parts when you do need to get them. The club is $65 per annum and is well worth joining. |
