On a friend's car there is a push knob that releases the belt slider. Hope that helps

Wow how strange. Can't find much on the net either. Maybe a call to a local dealer.

Most of them automatically adjust when you move the seat(s)

You just have to giggle it a little bit. It's all in the wrists.

Nah, it probably needs something replaced. Not too bad.

Yeah, the dealer can fix it. We can fix ANYTHING.

If you move your seat foward and watch where the seat belt comes out it should go down. If you move it back it should go up. If its broken expect about no more the 100$ for the part and maybe an hour or 2 depending on your skills.

If your cable snapped which moves the seat belt then the front seat, which ever one it is has to come out and the upper and lower pieces of the B billar have to some out. I believe E39's have T40 torx holding the seat down and the retractor under the carpet clicks in.
Once the seat is out you pull the carpet back, it should be in the lower left corner before the cross member of the vehicle. Once you have the B pillar components off all you do is follow the cable that possibly snaped and its self explinatory from there. Dont forget to hook the cable front the cable tensoner back upto the seat, or your seatbelt still wont move.
