I will call up strictly today. I am headed up to a tranny place in Lynnwood this afternoon. If it the wrong fluid, that would be something else.

Just got off the phone with Strictly BMW. They are saying tranny and they wouldn't rebuild it, they would put a remanufactured one or a used one.

Fuck, looking like it will need to be done. Devin, if I buy it, when do you finish school?

If strictly were to do it, $5735 for parts and labor. The gearbox costs $4860.

damn! ya i'm done december but i'll have a few weekends to maybe do it. we'll probably be able to get it done in one full day if you have the new tranny ready to put in and all but i'd want to leave 2 just in case. i don't charge that much for my time hahaha
hope you can find a deal! maybe look into performance gears rather than oem i know that usually aftermarket parts are cheaper than bmw ones

Hey Devin,

Here is the low down. I wrote a letter to Roundel magazine Tech Talk, the BMW CCA magazine. Mike Miller the tech advisor said that the clutches on the M5 and 540i, since they have the V8 are notorious for wearing out prematurely. He advised using the uuc 850ci clutch, which is 40 mm bigger and it will last much longer, it will cost $2800 for the clutch and flywheel. He also advised having www.metricmechanic.com rebuild the tranny. Check out their website. They take apart the gearbox and rebuild it with better and sounder parts, synchros, etc. They have engineered the new gearbox to make up for the weak links in the OEM tranny. They want $4000 for the rebuild.
