dont know if this is the correct category

well, my 89 535i has a few glitches, electricaly speaking, that i am trying to wrap my head around. Mainly its the guage cluster, but also the door locks are kinda strange.
As far as the guage cluster goes, the odometer fades away once in a while. Now I know that this is a normal issue with this car but from what I understand and what Ive researched so far its the capacitor behind the guage cluster. Well another thing that falls under the same category, is the tach and the gas guage didnt work for a minute or two, as wel as the msg board when I started it up to go to work this morning. Thats the first ime this has ever happened that I have noticed, but I have only had the car for 3-4 weeks now. Ive read that this is most comon when it is cold out side, so does that mean that when it is warm it will go back to normal? Or that once it gets cold, thats it. Its going to start to get worse.
Now with the door locks..... When I lock the car, it unlocks right away, then when I lock it again, it stays locked. I always have to lock it twice. Now Im thinking it could be a charging problem with the alternator, or just a weak battery. And if it is, could a weak battery or alternator have an adverse affect on the guage cluster?
If it is the capaicitor with the guage clustre has anyone here attempted this fix? And if so, how was it?
I definetly have the ability to do this, but how much time, and what kind of problems should I watch for?
Thanks guys.

Your "lock issue" is one of the locks not making full movement. Usually it's the trunk lock. The trunk lock accuators will do that after time & it's common, doing it twice makes the lock go the remaining turn. Try cleaning the trunk accuator.
The dash issue can be a couple of things - try either the Bentley Manual or try http://www.bimmerdiy.com/e34
