Need help Service engine soon light on
Went to an independent BMW auto repair shop and had them
Check it out and they said it was due to oil separator (pvc) causing a lean mixture and need to replace it also o2 sensor bank 2 before cat needs to be replaced! If any one had this problem pls reply
The oil separator is a system that maintains and regulates crankcase ventilation and pressure. If the car is running lean that could be an issue. As well the O2 sensors aret very expensive and when they fail they usually cause a check whine warning light.
One thing you can look into is having the OBD scanned for Codes. The Code it throws will give you a good indication of what is wrong. Some auto parts stores like Advance carry OBD scanners and will scan it for free.

After replacing two O2 sensors, sparkplugs, fuel pressure regulator, and a coil pack on my 1994 540i to cure a rough idle and black exhaust smoke, I finally learned about an oil separator assembly located on the back of the engine's intake manifold. Replacing the assembly cured the problem.
The BMW V8,'s are known for that problem. It's quite common for their to be issues and an upgraded part fixes the problem. Easy to fix, hard to reach for some.
