I just looked at an 89 535i in mint condition, if I can come up with the extra cash Ill be taking that one, it is f***in sexy, M5 rims performance chip, suspension upgrades, it is F***in tight. And low kms as well, all service records.

A lot of wrong info here....
Pre-90 525s had a m20 - 168 hp, 164 lb.ft
91-93 had a m50 with 192 hp and 184 lb.ft
In 93, the engine got VANOS (variable valve timing) (M50TU - technical update) ... i dont know if the power output changed, but the torque curve became much more linear
Only 5 percent of 535s were made in 5 speed. Rest are automatic. m30 puts out 208 hp if i'm not mistaken.
i didnt read all of this thread cause i was too lazy, but jybute here in calgary the dealership i bought my car from has a 2 1995 BMW 540i's for sale. Both black exterior, one has a grey interior with an auto, the other black interior with a six speed. Both come with car phones and power seats. There actualey in pretty good shape, but the guy told me that the one with the six speed needs some front end work (i.e ball joints, and such) so you could probably get it cheaper than the asking price of $15,000

cool, whats the name of the dealership in calgary? ill probably be going down next week to look. depending on what i get from insurance anyway. there are more bimmers for sale in calgary. but if you go to autotrader.ca in advanced search under, 7,000$- 15,000$ you should see the 89 535i i was talking about with the 5 speed. its red with M5 rims and euro tail lamps, and lowered about an inch and a half.its one of the only decent 5 series in edmonton thats in my price range.

i'd sell you mine for around 8k if you wanted. that one you're lookin at ends up being about 10k US. think it over. i just had the car inspected and only a few bushings are bad, engine is strong and runnin well but i'm fixing those soon.
^^ 8k for your car seems like a prettyy good deal. And the name of the dealership is Calagary Auto Selection, located on Macloed trail south right next to South Centre Fine cars. i cant remamber what the guys name is off hand but tell him if u go that u know the guy who bought the burgandy 328i and he should be abe to help u out. i have pics of one of the 5's on my comp, if u want i can email em to you.

for what my car has done to it and the fact that it is one of the 5% i think that is an extremely good price. i'm kinda looking to get an r6 now though. pm me if you're interested
i still have the bmw inspection paper from two days ago saying exactly what is up. couple bushings here and there and i'm going to replace the driveline flex disc.
Get the 6 speed 540. As long as it doesn't have EDC (which mine does) and has been serviced well and looked after, you can't get a better car for the money.
The EDC is better, but horrendously expensive to fix when you need to. If it doesn't have TC, then you can slip the E32 LSD into it and have a brilliant car for road and track. Again, mine has TC and you don't notice. I can (and have) beaten E30's in Grasskhana down here.
The E34 is not as chuckable as the E30/E36. But 212kW and 400Nm of torque takes some beating. Also try to get 4 people in a 3 series and go for a long drive. See how your passengers feel at the end.
Fuel economy is good in the 540 also (driven sensibly). I can average 9.4l/100km with the Cruise control set at 120kph.
