Either or actually. You need to get a meter (high impedance digital type) and check the power at the fuel pump. Should be close to source right when you turn the key to on and then go away in a couple of seconds. It will kick back up when you start cranking. If it's not getting voltage you need to check fuses and relays. If it is getting power and not spinning, then the pump is most likely bad. The 3rd option is a clogged/crimped fuel line or backwards fuel filter. Sounds like we might be getting somewhere here.........

Okay how weird is this....I just went outside and just for interest's sake I thought I should give it another try....strangely enough it started when I turned the key ???
What the hell can this be ? Starts one day and the next day its dead ? I switched it off...left it for about 5 minutes and tried again....started up again wtf ?
I must say when idleing it feels a bit rough...when I push the throttle its fine but when just idleing it feels rough...but then again this might be because it's still cold ?
I'm completely dumbstruck.
What could cause it to start one day and the next day just nothing ???

Will get a new feul pump relay and replace it,the car seems to start now everytime ? Weird stuff...I'm happy but the problem now is that I dont realy trust the car anymore.
Are there any other things you think might be causing the problems ? I would like to just replace all the faulty things and hopefully eleminate the problem.

Fuse, Relay, check all the connectors. Could be an intermittent security system problem, Fuse and relay are cheap, should be located in the junction box under the hood, consult a manual for exact locations. HOPEFULLY that will solve your issue, good luck

From the Bentley manual, for the 3 series: "If the engine control module (ECM) does not receive a crankshaft position signal during cranking, the engine will not start." Just a thought...

I had an AH HA moment this last weekend, I had a similar problem with my E34. The double lock didn't disengage when I unlocked the doors, meaning the EWS module was grounding out the ckp signal. I pulled the yellow relay under the back seat, no more problem. I'm not sure which EWS you have but try that, could be the bastard spawn hell child that's making your life miserable.

WHoo hoo....we found the problem....or at least a part of it.
My dad and I took out the backseat last night when we got home after work because he kept saying that he thinks the petrol pump is not getting power. So we took a look,he found the wire that supplies power to the pump, tested it and found that there was no power coming to the pump.
He then cut the wire and then gave it power from the main power line (was a thick red cable which was also found under the back seat) and voila.....the car started immediately.....even started much easier than it normaly would.
So yeah...my dad finaly found the problem and this weekend we will trace the wire and find where the problem is and replace whatever needs.
Guys thanks for all the help, especialy to Big Evil for all the quick and very helpfull advise which pointed us into the right direction from the start.
