knocking sound when using aircon
when the aircon is on, i can sometimes hear a clunk / or knocking sound from the compressor. aircon is working fine. i got cold air. what could be the problem? if it is the clutch from the compressor, can it be fixed? or have to replace the whole compressor?
thanks
1999 535i V8 ( same aircon as 540)

The clutch wont knock, just slip and prevent a good drive to the compressor. I think it sounds like the compressing piston inside the compressor failing. (Again, get a second opinion on that, or get an exploded parts view of the unit to see if it is the normal piston type of compressor) but I reckon thats what it could be.

I think the compressor is a sealed unit, and probably doesnt need extra oil, but like the sealed trans & diff, it may require some, depending on the year & mileage of the car. More likely though, its been running low on internal lube lately, and this has caused some wear, which is now unfortunately starting to get to the stage where you can hear it..
