540 hood latch problem
today after checking the oil/antifreeze i went to close the hood and for some reason it wouldn't latch. i tried jiggling the release in the car, and adjusting the lever on the hood pushing on it, slamming it, but could not get it to latch. every time I lifted up on the hood to make sure it was closed it came up. nothing was obstructing the hood. i tried to get it closed several times then just took another car as I was late already.
when I came home the problem seemed to have fixed itself (i know it sounds crazy) when i pull up on the hood now it seems fine...
anyway I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and also if anyone had any suggestions on how to fix it.
Also, I'm new to this site but already I want to thank all of you for such helpful posts! I looked through posts for over an hour before joining. Keep up the great work!
Had a similar problem with my 325i. In my case the springlike coils connected to the hood cable release that normally would grab the plunger on the hood stayed retracted due to corrosion, stiffness, and accumulation of all sorts of stuff over the years. The temporary, workable cure was kinda simple enough, get the screwdriver from out of the trunk and just flick the coils toward the opening of the plunger holes. Bit of an inconvenience having to do this practically every time the hood was opened though.
A more permanent solution came about when I was having some body work done on the car (replacing rusted sections) and the shop guy got in there and cleaned up and lubricated the release cable and mechanism. You might want to have that done at an auto body shop, I really don't know how to gain access.
