How embarrassing

This weekend was the first winter trip for my 530i to my buddy's cabin in upstate NY. He's got a private road off the main street, which turns to about a 15 degree incline on the last 1/2mi. They had gotten about 2" of snow, and the private roads don't get plowed by the town. I got about halfway up the incline, but the car just couldn't make it the rest of the way. Everybody else had front wheel drive, so it was no problem for them. After about a half hour of trying, I had to abandon the car where it was on the side of the road and walk the rest of the way. Man I didn't hear the end of it all weekend, these people were full of jokes about my misfortune. The tires are almost at the end of their tread life, maybe new tires will help. But man that really sucked, especially because I had the nicest car of anyone there :(

where in upstate ny? you should have seen tuesday, we got like 6-7 inches of snow, and for some reason the retards didnt plow it, so like an idiot i drove to school and tuesday morning and after getting there i found out school was closed :doh and for me, even though i feel really badly for abusing my car like that, i have an LSD so i just put it in first, take ASC off and just spin the tires at high RPM and i slowly climb up inclines(like my driveway which is very very steep)

The cabin is in Hunter, about 2mi down the road from the base lodge. Yea, I tried everything- including going up in reverse, Johnny:D Packed snow vs freshly fallen, starting back at the bottom and gaining as much speed as I could, nothing worked. The car just kept sliding to the side, and I had to stop before I ended up either in the drainage ditch on the left or a steep ravine on the right.

do you have a LSD?

MTurboPower3 12-09-2007 08:16 PM

Why did you get stuck? I never thought a 530 didn't have enough power to get up a hill with 2in of snow.

nick_318is 12-09-2007 08:23 PM

^Dude its called Rear wheel drive and they don't work in the snow so well because you can't get enough power down to the ground to push the car up (go outside and try to push something big on ice and go anywhere), front wheel drive is better for the snow because the car is being pulled by the front wheels.

xsperf - I don't think the 5er has a lsd.

Cough Snow tires Cough.

witeshark 12-09-2007 08:41 PM

The main reason FWD is better on snow is because the drive wheels have the engine weight right on top of them.

No LSD, otherwise I doubt I would have had this problem. But I don't run into this kind of situation enough to warrant getting a second set of tires for the winter. In fact, I think if I had already bought the all seasons that I'm planning on getting, this wouldn't have happened. The Conti's I have right now only have about 20% tread left on them.

that sucks man, my 325 is pretty darn good in the snow.
