E12, E28, E34, E39, E60General discussion and technical help for all year 5 series cars.
Check out the high speed run made by a BMW E60 545er on the German autobahn. Even more impressive?? This wasn't top-end either. Andy tell us the car actually had more to give, but ran out of road as the autobahn began transitioning over to their "National Highway." Pretty impressive.

Nice, but i don't think it had much more, if you notice at the end of the video its a 6500rpm and if you go to like 7500 you'll blow the engine through the hood. Just because 8000 is the redline, doesn't mean its meant to reach it.

You're probably correct to speculate that the car won't pull much more north beyond 180 mph.
Regarding your comment on the redline, however, the engine won't necessarily 'blow' as you suggest here once redline is attained.
Below is one official definition of redline.
"Redline refers to the maximum engine speed at which an internal combustion engine or traction motor and its components are designed to operate without causing damage to the components themselves or other parts of the engine."
With proven engineering and advanced, cutting edge powerplants such as those found in current generation BMW's, the car is fully capable of achieving it's peak rpm redline as designed and engineered, and can probably do so without suffering any damage.
This said, hitting over 180 like Andy here is plenty fast enough for me already!
Imagine, that's over three (3) miles traveled per minute at this rate.
