Jolting gear changes and juddering

Hi there. I have recently purchased a 1999 520i SE (which is brilliant) but i've noticed that when changing gear (from 1st to second or second to third) there is a bit of a jolt which I originally attributed to me not being used to the clutch and geabox. I have also noticed that at 80mph it feels like the engine is juddering and when I accelerate hard the power delivery isn't very smooth with a jerky sort of feel. The gears feel every so slightly grindy when working my way up through the box. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas what it might be? Clutch? Gearbox? Engine? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if this will help, but maybe check for worn engine and transmission mounts.

I probably also should have mentioned the fact that I am a complete basket case when it comes to mechanics so would have no idea what to look for or where to look for them
