E39 Wants To Stall Below 1000rpm

Hi There, Pleeeeeeeeeease Can Anyone Help I Have A 1999 E39 523i. It Is A Superb Car And Love It To Bits,................

Lately I Am Hating It. It All Started When..............i Was Pulling Off Slowly On Gear 1 And There Was A Humming Noise Coming From Somewhere. Then This Gradually Went Away, Instead What I Got Was A Farting Sound Everytime I Turned The Ignition On And Off.

Now All That Has Gone....but What I Am Getting Now Is A Very Rough Idling, It Simply Wants To Stall,

Whenever I Move Off Its Fine But A Bit Jerky. When Ever I Get To A Junction And Put The Clutch In, As Soon As The Rev Meter Comes Below 1000 Revs It Stalls Or Wants To Stall

Please Its Driving Me Mad Can Anyone Help Becuase Its Got New Spark Plugs And Stuff

it makes sense for a car to stall below 1000rpm I don't think anything is wrong. When your pulling out into first rev it to 1500 and then shift.

Could be a vacuum leak? How does it sound in the morning? Does your car have trouble starting? You can check a vacuum leak with a smoke machine. A shop hooks it up to the manifold and lets it run. The smoke will leak out. You can also use carb cleaner. Let the car run, spray carb cleaner on the vacuum lines. If the idle drops, you have found your leak.

The other option is a bad Idle Control Valve (ICV). You can remove it and clean and test drive it. Do a search on ICV on this forum or bimmerforums and you will find a DIY.

Hope this helps.

Paul

hi mate thanks for ur help,

there is no trouble starting the car. the problem is notcied when stationary, the rev meter needle keeps going up and down and there is no loss of power on higher revs or speed until i put the clutch in to break, the rev meter comes down as it is suppose to, but struggles to go back up again

errrrrrrrm. any idea which area of the engine to check for the vacuum leaks. and do you mean vacuum leak as in a pipe broken or something. What does the idel valve do please thanks for ur help

The idle control valve adds airflow to the intake as needed to maintain correct idle. If it's clogged or malfunctioning, it may be causing these rpm fluctuations you're experiencing. It looks like a t-valve, located above the engine block just under the intake manifold. Another possibility is a defective throttle position sensor, which affects the operation of the ICV. I'm not sure if you have one tho; the newer E39's use drive-by-wire throttle systems which I believe eliminated the TPS.
