Throttle position sensor?
 

Has anyone had to replace a throttle position sensor.
What were the symptoms experienced?
My e34 seems to have a power surge at a spacific point in the accelerator travel and missfires under acceleration under that point.
Please help. Summer session has drained the money needed to have this checked out at BMW.

The TPS is really easy to change, but unfortunately its one of those readily changed parts that the dealer is well aware of how often it goes bad -that means it could be costly (considering you'll have to get it from the dealer).
My power issues turned out to be a misplaced vacuum hose not reconnected by the garage. Took three weeks to find, due to its location. If there is a junk yard nearby, consider getting one off a wrecked vehicle. The removal of it from a wreck will give you an idea of just how easy it is to replace.

if you search for the part on autopartswherehouse or basically any onine parts store you will find an OEM part for half price.

as for the labor to change it, it shouldnt be too hard. Just changed mine on my E30

It's real easy to change. I changed mine on my E30 also but had to remove the Throttle body to do it so I was sure that it went back in the right position. It's held by 2 phillilps head screws. The replacement part isn't that expensive either and I got my part at the dealer.

How do you change it? where is it located? I have a 318ti.
Do we need any special tools? Do we need to adjust the rpm?
Right now I have no tools at all, just some wrenches and screw drivers.

wrenches and screwdrives, those are tools :) actually, thats probably all you will need

however, i am not sure the TPS could cause misfiring, maybe rough idle, but you should probably have the problem looked at more thoroughly before buying it

My mechanic told me that TPS is the problem. I was afraid of the same problem as you described. where is the TPS located in the 381ti? Is it near the left headlight, the one with a cable that connects to the throttle receiver?

on the m42/m44(318 motors) it is located above the throttle body. You have to take the throttle body off to get to it but its simple.

Realoem.com search for the part and itll show you exactly where it is.

I had to replace my tps on my e34. My problem was the trans would go into failsafe mode, which means it stays in 3rd gear. If you get a dealership to read out the fault codes, it will say on the screen, "TPS sensor calibration" or something like that.
I believe BMW sells them for around $120 or so.

Not the easyest to change, there mounted on the side of the throttel body and usually the screws are corroded in there. A 90* philips screw driver or a #2 with a very small handle will work.

hi there, i recently bought a 1992 e34 525i 24v, and it has the same problem as you'rs. last weekend i changed airflow and tps but still the f...ing thing continues to piss me off( parts were from a scrapper)! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May have been worn out parts from the scrapper, or you have a wiring issue. Chances are though the tps you got may be worn (one of those things you just don't want used), does the problem still happen in the same place or has it shifted? autohausaz.com usually has them cheapest.

My BMW 525i E60 shakes when it is idelling.Can any one give an idea why?

Try to research even further on how to replace a Throttle Position Sensor of the car. You may never know if you won't try to really check it out thru other sources. In that way, you can learn how the correct and proper way of changing such part.

Not really, the list is rather long. Could be anything from a vacuum leak to a faulty sensor or fuel filter getting clogged, bad/worn motor mounts. Need more info, trouble codes? Type of fuel you're putting in? When does it do it (warm, cold or all of the above).
