"Lamp Module" - What is it?
I called on my motor engineer today to pay a bill (do they ever end?), and when I came out, I noticed that my headlights were on. All switches were off, and starting and stopping the engine did nothing.
My engineer called the local BMW Dealer (50 miles away) for advice, and he was told that my lamp module had gone, and quoted him £245 for a replacement. I didn't bite, but put out a parts request to car salvage firms on the internet. Got several replies saying "Never heard of it!"
Any ideas as to what this part SHOULD be called, so that I can search again?

Hi, that is one useful link! I think that I have found the part by a process of elimination. Just to follow on from my original query, if I have picked the right module, it says "Must be re-coded"
What on earth does THAT mean?
"Must be recoded" means that the modelue must be taken to the dealership to be programmed before it works in your car. Sadly, there is no way around this (unless you know an independednt mechanic that has somehow grabbed a hold of the programming tools the dealership uses).

How do I get at the durned thing!
I have now been offered the part by two BMW breakers, but they need the part number from the old part itself. They say "Its in the driver's footwell" - but I have found LOTS of screws under there, & don't want to undo the wrong ones! The breakers have closed for the day, can anyone tell me how to get at this part, please!

There is apparently a panel under the drivers side dash containing electrical components, i think this may be what you are looking for, it is above the clutch pedal to the left .
"To access this panel remove the lower dash panel on the drivers side, then remove the drivers side knee bolster, then lower the relay panel by gently releasing the plastic retainers."
this is exactly how the instructions are written in the manual; hope it helps.
edit; ive just realised these instructions are for a 3 series, sorry.
