Power Steering Hose leak - United Bimmer Community

Has anyone changed out the PS hoses from the reservoir? It's leaking down the hose onto other hoses, bottom pan and making a mess although I haven't noticed any fluid loss yet. I was going to add an extra hose clamp to the crimped on one but looks like not enough room. Maybe I should remove the OEM hose clamps and just replace with a screw type clamp. 2001 525i.

As I searched this I found the answers on another forum. Kinda disappointed no one here bothered to reply but I understand it is a common problem.

On my car the hoses were leaking like sponges. I replaced them all

Don't take it personal, folks here won't throw suggestions out if they're not a high% of being correct. Most would rather not mislead you when trouble shooting or fixing a problem. Plus a majority of the members are college kids with E36s and 3 series and not 5s & up. And to my knowledge it's not a major issue (and I worked for BMW NA)

I didn't take it personal c1apton and thanks for your comments. I suppose I wouldn't give a wrong answer just to answer either. I was able to fix my problem with a new hose but there was a little more to it than I expected. If anyone needs help with this please email me. BTW I'm waaaay past college age but this is my first 5 series and just a touch different than some 3's.

After getting into replacing the one, I should have done all of them like you did. And, you're right, they were like sponges.

Happened on my 540, except I didn't notice immediately and I fucked up the pump. So, I had to replace the pump and all of the hoses.

Most of the time its just the oem crimp clamp that loosens up. If you have the right tool you can tighten it or better yet cut it off and replace it with a good german made screw clamp.

On my 1993 318is, I believe the power steering hoses are leaking. Is this a hard job to do? Do I need to drain the fluid? What fluid do I use? Is there anything that is connected to the power steering system that I would be messing with?

I'm pretty sure this has been happening (in a small amount) since I bought the car 3 years ago. I've had no power steering loss, but definitely cannot afford a broken pump.

Amanda, for now just keep topping off the PS reservoir with ATF (yup, automatic trans fluid -- DONT use regular PS fluid from the store).

I have had mixed opinions about the replacement. Some people say it is just a matter of being able to get underneath the car -- others say that it is a royal pain on the behind. either way, yes -- you need to drain the fluid. I have all the parts to do it in my apartment, including all the clamps, nuts, bolts, and even a new reservoir -- I should be able to report back in the next few weeks.

<Hi I have a 2007 BMW 530i which has a minor leak with the power steering. Would you recommend having a shop repair it or diy? I've already tightened the hose but it seems to be leaking still, any suggestions?

Replacing the hoses is the best option. The deteriorate over time and should be replaced. Tightening the hose is a temp fix.

A few years ago, I encountered a similar problem with my 1994 540i leaking power steering fluid. However, the leak was located at the steering box. Tightening the hose connections at the steering box did not stop the leak. It wasn't until I actually disconnected the hoses did I find that the factory compression fitting on one of the hoses was causing the leak. Replacing the hose solved the problem.
