AC Fan suddenly stopped working/blowing air.

All of a sudden there is no air coming from the vents of my 2001 525i. I set it to Max and nothing. I figure it may be a resister/fuse or something but have no idea where to look. I already checked all the fuses located in the glove compartment, but figure it is not located there.
I doubt that the fan completly went out but before i take it to the shop i was hoping that someone could give me some pointers as to where to diagnose the problem. Pics would be great as I am new to repairs on my vehicle.
thanks,

- L

It sounds like the hereditary BMW blower resistor problem. (sorry no pics on your particular model) check out "Mullets" DIY for basic info and you might check www.realoem.com for diagram and part # & location. Hope this helps

yea thats not ur AC fan, thats your blower fan, the "AC fan" is the aux fan infront of your AC condensor

c1apton, you think thats the resistor? i thought that the resistor only limits the speed of the fan, so if it isnt working it would always be on high, sounds to me like a blower motor...

c1apton 05-16-2007 07:26 PM

I'd be checking ALL the fuses (under hood also) but the resistor is a common issue - both ways low & high speeds (they get hotter at higher speed) and as often as it seems a problem - those would be my starting points.

true, could be that when the resistor is blown it opens the circuit

Thanks for the info guys

I went ahead and ordered a Blower Resister from bavarian auto.

Hopefully that will do the trick.

good luck, btw, on an 01, thats rediculous, thats pretty new(compared to our cars).. this usually happens to cars that are atleast 10+ years old...

linkey 06-15-2007 04:40 PM

So check this out..... I ended up ordering the blow Resister from bavautosport, in anticipation that the issue would be resolved. Well a few days later, before the shipment arrived to my house, the AC Fan/blower began to work as expected. I figured it started working after I had removed the air filter just to make sure that there was nothing stopping the airflow. Anyways, my package arrived and I sent it back to bavautosport.
Well, just my luck, about 2 weeks later my AC started to act up again and no fan.
So my question is, is there some kind of sensor that I am not aware of or does anyone know if I need to clean out or replace the filter to fix this issue?

TIA

you ARE speaking of the "cabin air filter" right? The cabin filters can plug up and the fan will overheat. You also might have a lose connection that you might've bump when messing w/the filter. Check ALL your connections going to heat & A/C controls but the resistor wouldn't be bad idea to replace just for peace of mind.

linkey 06-15-2007 06:14 PM

You are correct, I am talking about the "cabin air filter". I will verify all the connections as you have mentioned and let you know if it did the trick.

Thanks,

Hello Linkey;
Try this http://www.540i6.com/finalstagereplacement.html. It could be your problem my blower fan started to have a mind of it's own on my 530i a little like your problem. hope it is of some help regards Allan

Linkey, were you able to fix your problem?
I have exatly the same problem. I used last link about motor blower resistor, but after I dissconected and plugged it back in, my AC started working just fine...but then in couple days it would just stop working and then works again...Let me know if changing FSR helped.
Thanks a lot

final stage resistor in my 540i died last spring. Just buy it for $80 and bask in the cool air :).
