Trans Program+ 92 E34 525i

I have an error code that says "Trans Program" and my car gets stuck in the "safety gear" (third) and then it will reset itself once i let the car sit shut off for a little while.

This may or may not have anything to do with it. Some of the relays under the hood, by the windshield, on the drivers side get very hot. Too hot to touch (i burned myself on one).

Also, sometimes the car has this issue where it idles high, then it will drop low for an instant every two seconds or so.

A shop told me it was electrical, so I was hoping that maybe there was a unit that you guys know about that I could just replace or maybe an idea to pursue.

I hope you've solved your problems by now but for anyone else who sometimes sees the Trans Failsafe Program. Check your battery for charge. I know this is a symptom of a low system voltage for some manufacturers (and I saw the same message several times before i replaced my E39 528 battery)
