My new carsoft diag gadget has turned up aux fan relay fault question is were is the relay and what is the aux fan for im guessing its the electric fan in front of radiator but whats that for when there is a viscous fan on the engine oh and its a 2002 530d sport any input would be appreciated
The electric Aux fan in front of the radiator has two purposes.
The first is to add additional cooling capacity when the Air Conditioning is on.
The second is as an emergency fan if the engine temperatures rise above normal limits. The fan has a Low setting that comes on just a bit above the thermostat temp and a High speed that comes on 5 or 10 degrees above that.
The price of overheating a BMW engine can be quite high so belt and suspenders backup cooling systems are a very important thing.
