Coolant leak?

Looking at a 2002 530i and seems to be a coolant problem. Seems coolant is shooting up through the overflow hole next to the cap like there is too much in it but the check coolant level light keeps coming on and after a few miles of driving and I start to lose heat. Temp guage never went above halfway? Any ideas? Buy the way I'm a newbe and just wanted to say hey to all of you! Also have a 2001 X5 that the wife drives and we love it!

Was the coolant flushed and refilled, maybe incorrectly? Sounds like there's air in the system, and it needs to be properly bled. There's a couple of other guys on here that own E39's so stick around, they maybe able to help. Oh yea, welcome, and post up some pics of the cars!

Thanx

Not sure, but the vehicle was just in for what I thought was maintenance. Have to check it out because that is what it is acting like, air in the system. Any idea on how to bleed it ,I'm not real familiar with this car.
