M5 Headers

I just scored some E39 M5 headers for my 540i. Any ideas if they will be a direct fit. I was in the right place at the right time and they were given to me. So I have not done any research about them.

Point me in the right direction if anyone knows.

Paul

Aren't the 540i and M5 engines completely different engines?

The engines are different, but have similarities. It might be a stretch, but I hope they would be a direct fit.

just match exhaust port gaskets before attacking job - if they line up you're in. (You can always have flanges reworked) Good score!

I will. I am trying to source an engine that has been pulled at a wrecking yard to compare and check fitment. I haven't had much luck yet and I haven't found much info on the net about the swap.

As far as I can tell from the ETK parts list the 97/98 540 exhaust manifolds and the 2001 M5 manifolds have the same part numbers.

However I am losing faith in some of the numbers I am finding.

The fuel rail has the same part number in the ETK for the 95 840 M60 and the 97 540 M62 but they are quite different in the inlet and outlet fuel connections.

I'll try to remember to take pictures of the headers on '97 540 motor in the garage in the morning.

I have a 2001 e39 540i and the part number for the m5 headers and my 540i headers are different, but the pictures look similar.

Looks like the gaskets have the same numbers. Maybe someone can cut and paste the pictures instead of the links.

C1, if the headers are the same, do you think that I can bring them to a machine shop and modify them to increase air flow? Maybe I can modify the collector? If I can't, I am stuck with some very large paper weights .
