Alpine CDE 9852

So i was telling my wife today about how my current headunit more frequently had problems. sometimes it wouldnt read cd's, regular or mp3 discs, sometimes when i turned it off, instead of just showing the time on the display, the entire unit would shut off and the antenna would go up, sometimes the am/fm radio wouldnt play, etc.

i was getting sick of it anyway, it kinda stuck out badly in the E30 dash (not that the new one is any different, but it is nicer i think)

so we go to best buy as planned, and happen to be looking at headunits. we talked about several different units, and i wasnt planning on buying anything. then she just picked this one up and said "lets go"

might be awhile until i install it. its cold. but it shouldnt take that long

i always had to be able to play MP3 discs. my first head unit was a cheap ass jensen (cheapest headunit available at the time that played mp3's), then while i was deployed my wife got this aiwa. now this one.

it plays mp3's and has an ipod connection (which i wont use). other than that, pretty basic stuff. but an alpine

what do you guys think?

Alpine did some pretty cool units this year, how much you paid for it?

Hey!!!! That MY head unit hahaha!!! Its a good one, the iPod interface is shitty, but the iPod sound quality is superb. Its been a good head unit. I sliced up my hand trying to get that bitch into the e46, hopefully it will be easier on your e30.

Good choice, Cels- true to your Army nature . . Alpine's main business is making electronics for the military.

thanks all!

just got finished installing it, and wow, what a difference.

looks better in the dash than my old aiwa, and sounds so much better. it was easier to get in this time since i already had the wiring from the E30 figured out. just took some time because i dont have a decent pair of wire strippers

gonna have to read the manual on this one tho. controls are different.

Isn't that one $350?

I'm looking at a new Alpine too. I want one because of my iPod, I have good songs that I want to play in my car.

Edit: I'm looking at the CDA-9857 for $350.

The 9852 (one you got) is $180.

yeah it does. and when i turn the unit off, i have it set to turn completely off. so all that is left is the classic orange glow of the bmw dash.
