Car Audio and Electronics

I have a friend who used to run the x-type tens and he ran the alpine amps. I believe they were type 'D'. If I am correct the type D amps are meant for subs and feature a single channel. The most important thing is to match the impedance of the sub and amp. For instance, if you have a sub being run on 4 ohms, then your amp needs to be 4 ohms as well.

These requires a lot of power to perform like they are designed. The Alpine amps do a good job. The MRP-M650 is a single channel class D amp netting 400W RMS which will do a fairly decent job.
The class D amps are typically a sub-only amp, the design of these can produce a lot of power and are efficient in their design, resulting in low heat.
When looking at an amp, throw the peak (or max) ratings out the window. Those are worthless numbers. Look at the RMS ratings, you need something around 300-500 watts per sub.

Amplifier classification has more to do with its inherent design than what speakers they'd be ideal with, although the 2 previous suggestions are correct: class D will exchange less energy into heat. While class A is the worst in terms of heat, it produces the cleanest output.
More important for subwoofer applications are the amp's slew rate and damping factor; w/o getting into detail, the higher the values, the better the amp is suited for longer excursions typical of subs
