Roozworks for tweeter. (AKA Hi Fi Buys) and beleive me he knows his shit. He's pretty much considered the go-to guy on car audio around here. Anything he says, you can trust. he won't lead you astray.

You have three choices, stand behind our troops, grab a gun and toe the line with our troops, or stand in front of them, they can use the extra armor.
As dar as I know, if the speakers are rated at 4Ohms, they should sound fine with aftermarket amps and active crossovers.
Yes, but their power handling is quite limited; consider that the stock amp only outputs 15w/ch at maximum. You can probably get away with it if you replace the amp with a comparably rated aftermarket one, filter out the low end, and let the sub take up the slack. But in the end you'd only bring out the worst in the stock speakers. That's what Rooz meant, and most people will concur- the stock system really works best when left alone . . the HK amp has the crossovers built in, so you'd have to account for that, too. I would leave the current setup as is, and just add the sub and add an amp to power it.

Guys,
Its not the HK configuration. It has the smaller amp which indeed sounds like CRAP! For starters I am going to remove that amp and install 2 4 channel amps with an active crossover driving the original speakers.
Then, I will change them one by one to get the most out of the system.
