Upgradability???

Greetings, I posted some questions in the 5 series forum but thought the audio questions might get better answers here. I am considering buying a used 5 series wagon ...either a '94-'95 or a '99-'01. As an audiophile I will never be happy with a OEM system. Whatever car I end up getting I have plans for a high end "ubersystem". Is there any caveats that I need to know about? I realize that the e34 is more conducive to a standard DIN than an e39 ...but I also realize that anything is possible with enough time and $$$. What is needed to mount a DIN HU in an e39? What about speaker placement for either model? Has anyone added more sound deadening to their cars. What areas produced the greatest results? Any other advice/info is appreciated.

The E39 is a 1-1/2 DIN, right? I don't know crap about them, but I've seen pics of installs where the wood trim was continued across and over the aftermarket radio. Maybe you could look into whether that piece can be bought somewhere? Like this one:
