Stereo Help!!!
 

Greetings from a new member! Bought a 328is about a week ago, it had a climate control "mind of it's own" problem. Found this board, read about the fix and tried it... FIXED!!! Thanks so much for the information.

New problem, just picked up the car from the tint shop, turned on the stereo and heard what sound like a blower motor through rumbling through the speakers. I turned the volume down and I heard static through the speakers as I rotated the vol. knob. I flipped off the premium sound button and everything started working fine, flip the button on and no sound at all from either radio or cd. Also, anytime the stereo is turned on I now have an audio tachometer... a high pitched squeel through the speakers that changes with the RPM's. GEEEZ this is annoying. Is this a common symtom for a fuse / ground / fried amp etc... It is also very rainy, don't know if something might have gotten wet at the tint shop or not!

i had that whine from the engine coming thru the speakers on my other E30. took the stock amp outta the circuit and the problem disappeared.

Your tint shop tinted rear window correct? If they used a metallic tint they connected the antenna lines together w/ the tint. That's your antenna in the rear window (built in w/ the defrost lines.) I'd be back talking to your tinter to see if they have a non-metallic tint. You didn't have the problem before the tint right?

More like they amplified the antenna with the tint, now the damn thing picks up every little thing from the car :eek

Ooops, guess I posted in the wrong place...sory bout that. The Tint Shop boasts that they use graphite material, is that the problem? I have been messing with the car, now the stereo plays fine, no more audio tach in the speakers, but the dynamic sound button does nothing, no boost in sound. The stereo works the same whether the button is pushed or not. So, does the premioum sound have a seperate amp that is activated with the button, or is it built in to the head unit itself? If it is seperate, where is it located? And, would you suspect that it's blown or is it fused internally?

Graphite tint is usually metallized, so that could be your problem.

I have no familiarity with stock sound systems; it's the first thing I get rid of when I buy a car. I suspect others here do the same, hence the lack of response here :(

You say there's no difference between dynamic on or off, what source are you using? Use tape or CD, not FM to determine this, as the signal strength/quality can impact your results. Since dynamic sound falls under signal processing, I would guess it's in the head unit, not the amplifier. E36 amps normally have built in crossovers, and that's pretty much the extent of signal processing they do. Like I said, I'm not too familiar, so I could be wrong here. The amp is located inside the driver's side rear side panel, if you wanna take a look at it. Hope this helps :)

You said the whine / static and all that was gone, now the only problem is the premium sound not working


As has been said, most of us don't know about stock audio systems, but. The dynamic sound button I'm assuming is like the built in audio boosts on aftermarket headunits. Mine is a Stereo MX button that adds 35w across 4 channels. If your button does nothing, (without me seeing in person) i'd guess either an option was changed in the headunit or there is a fault in the headunit.


Try testing the premium sound with all methods of input you have (cd, tape, radio, ipod). If none work, try and find a friend or a dealer that will let you swap headunits to test in your car, see if yours is faulty.


Also look into the settings on it. Tint guys could have been jammin' while doing the install and hit a button or ten.

And to answer the question about the premium sound amp being blown, it wouldn't make sense to me to have two amps in a circuit that your button switches between. The sound wouldn't work at all if it was routing through a bad amp. I'd say it's just one amp that, when you press the button, it draws more power.
